This waterproof relay is fully automatic and does not require a control signal to activate. As soon as the motor battery voltage reaches 13.3V, the relay will activate and couple the starting battery and the service battery (note that the thresholds are configurable). Similarly, as soon as the engine battery voltage drops below 12.9V, the relay will decouple the two batteries as this means that the engine is stopped or that a consumer (windlass for example) is using current on the starting battery and it is preferable to isolate it.
This unique design overcomes one of the limitations of conventional relays that do not accept overload. If, for example, the relay is in the closed position and a heavy load is required by the windlass on the starting battery, much of the current is likely to come from the service battery. In such a case, the voltage of the starting battery will drop rapidly and the relay will have to open. However, since the relay will be in the overload position, it will not be able to move to the open position. Current-limiting relays solve this problem, when an overload current is detected on the relay, a feature to limit the current to a value of 6A comes into play. The relay can then open without any problem as long as the current through it becomes quite reasonable.
