One of the limitations of conventional relays is that when the batteries are coupled (the relay is in the closed position), it has a power consumption of 0.45A (for an 80A model), which is negligible when the load source is an alternator or a charger as they produce a significant amount of electricity. On the other hand, if the power source produces less (wind turbine or solar panel) or if the relay is used to protect the batteries from a deep discharge, this consumption is a problem.
