One of the limitations of conventional relays is that when the batteries are coupled (the relay is in the closed position), it has a power consumption of 0.45A (for an 80A model), which is negligible when the load source is an alternator or a charger as they produce a significant amount of electricity. On the other hand, if the power source produces less (wind turbine or solar panel) or if the relay is used to protect the batteries from a deep discharge, this consumption is a problem. To fix the ideas, the consumption of a classic relay will be 10.8A over 24h or 75.6Ah per week.
The bistable relay is based on another mode of operation, the relay is put either in open or closed position, and whatever the position, the consumption remains low. It simply needs it to change the status circuit and to power the control board. The Sterling Bistable Relay consumes 0.5mA or 1000 times less than a conventional relay. Thanks to its very low power consumption it allows other applications such as
